There had been no sign of Jerome. Prudence went to bed feeling vaguely let down, but he was having his breakfast when she went to the restaurant in the morning.
“Another lovely day,” he observed.
“Are you driving somewhere?”
“Not until this afternoon.” She helped herself to orange juice and sat down at her table. Sieke and Pretty had already breakfasted, and Jerome brought his coffee over and sat down opposite her with a friendly, “May I?”
“I’m going into the town, I have to get something for my aunts.
They’re a little tired after yesterday. “
“They enjoyed themselves? And you?”
“Lovely, only I would have liked to see the whole island.”
He answered easily, “Oh, well, I dare say you’ll come again. Are you walking into town? May I go with you? I need to go to my bank.”
It would be pleasant to have company. They set out presently, after Prudence had visited the aunts and made sure that they were rested and had all they needed. Armed with an open signed cheque, she joined Jerome in the foyer.
They went up the hill this time, away from the sea, through Hauteville and then down the steps by the Town Church. It was still early and, although the streets were pleasantly filled, they weren’t crowded.
“The bank can wait,” said Jerome.
“Suppose you do your shopping first.”
The jewellers was on the corner of the arcade, its windows glittering with gold and gems. Prudence went in and was instantly recognised as the young woman who had been in previously with the elderly lady who had liked a particularly expensive gold chain. It was produced for her now—a lovely thing of solid gold links. Jerome had come in with her, and she turned to him now.
“Pretty, isn’t it?” she said.
“And very well made.” She turned back to the salesman.
“I’ll take it, please. I have a cheque and my aunt’s cheque card.”
She bent to write the cheque and Jerome, without appearing to do so, saw the amount—a very substantial sum, and paid without so much as a lift of the eyebrows. He wandered away and inspected some samples of silverware in another case. Only a few more days, he reflected, before they would leave, and although Prudence liked being with him he was clever enough to know that circumstances had thrown them together, not her choosing. He would have to go carefully, on the other hand he had very little time. They left the shop and he suggested coffee.
“Yes, please,” said Prudence, ‘but wouldn’t you like to go to your bank first? “
“Yes, of course, just across the street here. I won’t be a moment—just to cash a cheque.”
He went inside, went to one of the desks and sat down, picked up the pen and scribbled on the back of a paying-in slip, just in case she had followed him in. But Prudence was quite uncurious—besides, it was none of her business. She crossed the street again and studied the clothes in a boutique until Jerome joined her.
He took her to a small cafe at the far end of the high street and then led the way back to the harbour.
